Living Funerals

What is a living funeral?

A living funeral is a ceremony held while a person is still alive, giving them the chance to hear the words, stories and gratitude, that are so often shared only after death. It also gives them the chance to express how they feel about the people they care about.

Rather than marking the end of a life, a living funeral focuses on reflection, connection and appreciation. It can be deeply meaningful for the person being honoured, as well as for their family and friends, who are able to express their love and what that person means to them.
Living funerals can include personal stories, memories, music, readings or rituals chosen by the individual, and expressions of love, gratitude and reconciliation. They are generally focused on the joy and love that the individual has experienced during their life, and can be instrumental in preparing family and friends for their death.

Living funerals can take place wherever the individual chooses. They can be formal and ceremonial, but most of the time they are more of an intimate gathering, to celebrate their life with love, laughter and joy. Each one is shaped to reflect the wishes, values and personality of individual at its centre.

A living funeral can be a simple, meaningful way to gather and acknowledge a life that has mattered, while everyone can still be present together.
